About us
Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice is in Moggerhanger in Bedfordshire. We provide expert palliative and end-of-life care in the hospice and the community. We are here to help you and your loved ones, with everything from pain and symptom management to emotional and practical help.
About the Role
In palliative care, no two days are the same. Our inpatient unit cares for people with a wide range of conditions and symptoms, offering a unique opportunity to develop knowledge and skills while making a meaningful difference to patients and their families.
Our nurses provide compassionate, holistic care for people with life-limiting illnesses, supporting not only physical needs but also the emotional, psychological and spiritual wellbeing of patients and those close to them.
This role involves working a rotational shift pattern—including early, late, long days, nights and weekends—to support our 24/7 service. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside Specialty Doctors, therapists, volunteers and other colleagues to deliver the best possible outcomes for each patient.
About you:
Sue Ryder prides itself on giving our patients the best possible quality of life by providing a holistic and individualised service.
Our ideal candidate will share a genuine passion for palliative and end-of-life care and a desire to improve the lives of people living with life-limiting conditions. While experience in palliative care—such as within a hospice, high dependency unit, or oncology service—is welcomed, we also value candidates from a range of clinical backgrounds and provide training and support to help develop the specialist skills needed for this role. Our empathetic, skilled and motivated nurses are the true foundation of what Sue Ryder does.
Minimum essential criteria:
· NMC registration (RGN/RNA) and experience delivering inclusive patient care
· Ability to assess, plan, and deliver care with appropriate adjustments
· Skilled in accessible documentation and patient communication
· Commitment to upholding patients’ dignity, rights, and autonomy
·
Desirable Criteria:
· Experience in palliative or hospice care
· Mentorship qualification or experience supporting learners
In addition to this, you will need to demonstrate:
· A passion for palliative and end-of-life care
· Excellent communication, teamwork, and initiative.
· Evidence of continued professional development and willingness to learn.
We will provide a thorough induction with supernumerary time to settle into the role and full training/competency assessment will be provided.
There is plenty of scope to further develop your own skills in specialist palliative care, and planned career progression through our education programme and development framework is encouraged.
